Stadskracht (Power of the city): practice-oriented research for an inclusive and sustainable city

Stadskracht (Dutch for Power of the City) is an interdisciplinary, practice oriented research center dedicated to strengthening social, ecological, and economic sustainability in urban environments. Our team brings together expertise from social sciences, gerontology, occupational therapy, health sciences, and social work.

We collaborate with governments and socially driven organizations to evaluate social impact, design inclusive citizen engagement strategies, and support innovative practices in the non‑profit and social enterprise sectors. Through evidence‑based methods and co‑creative approaches, we help shape more equitable, resilient, and future‑ready cities.

We welcome partnerships with practitioners, researchers, and academic institutions eager to co‑create solutions for urban renewal and social innovation.

Who are we?

Stadskracht is an interdisciplinary and practice-oriented research center that wants to contribute social inclusion and qualitative living environment in urban areas via applied research and knowledge services for urban actors like government, non-profit organizations and citizen associations.

Our team consists of, among others, social scientists, gerontologists, occupational therapists, health scientists and social work researchers. Meet our experts below.

What do we do?

Stadskracht offers three types of research and services:

Social impact evaluations and effect measurements

What impact have you, as a government or organization, truly achieved with your social intervention? How does your effort contribute to broader societal goals, and which measurable indicators are relevant? Using scientifically proven methodologies, such as realistic evaluation, we answer these questions together. We guide you in defining a program theory, collecting and processing useful data, developing customized training programs, and facilitating organizational reflection. Visit our projects page for examples of projects such as the impact evaluation of the Digibanken or building expertise in impact-oriented work for the city of Sint-Niklaas.

Reaching and involving all citizens

How can you, as a local government and service provider, effectively reach and involve all citizens? How can you develop an inclusive offering that meets the diverse needs of the target group? Our research group has extensive expertise in various participation techniques and methods for conducting representative surveys. Attention is also paid to involving so-called "hard-to-reach" citizens. An example of this is the Age-friendly Cities researchproject, in which we investigate the experiences and needs of older adults in Hoboken and Borgerhout. Together with older adults and local policymakers, we co-create a more age-friendly living environment.

Supporting social entrepreneurs and non-profit organizations

Are you, as a social organization, actively developing innovative methods and practices, but are you facing specific challenges for which you haven't yet found a suitable solution? As a knowledge partner, we are here to facilitate and guide creative and effective approaches. We can also support the development of new methods and the dissemination and scaling up of proven effective practices. For example, we collaborated with Sering, Kuzo, and Ligo Antwerp to develop the innovative "Repeteren Om te Leren" (Rehearsing to Learn) methodology, aimed at integrating theatre and acting methods into Dutch as a Second Language (NT2) lessons at levels 1.1 and 1.2.

Research for who?

Stadskracht focuses primarily on two general client segments: government agencies and organizations with a social objective. Within these segments, we identify several subgroups.

The government client segment includes:

  • Departments of the Flemish government;
  • Local government services;
  • European governments and funds.

The client segment of organizations with a social objective includes

  • service-providing non-profit organizations,
  • social enterprises,
  • umbrella organizations.
