Resilient Artists

Problem description
The work field, including the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp (AP University College), is concerned about the psychological well-being of performing artists and is raising the alarm. The challenges for performing artists are numerous and specific, but little researched. They are situated in the physical, psychological and socio-artistic domain. Increasing the resilience of performing artists is essential to avoid psychological complaints.

Goal
This project aims to gain insight into the psychological strain on performing artists in order to develop a multidisciplinary (arts, psychology, medicine and health sciences) prevention programme to promote the psychological resilience of performing artists (dancers, musicians and actors). This project focuses on prevention and aims to increase the psychological resilience of performing artists by providing effective coping. The biopsychosocial model forms the framework for interpreting the findings.

Research question
In which way can a multidisciplinary prevention programme increase the resilience of performing artists? The sub-questions examine the psychological strain, resilience, risk and protective factors and coping skills of performing artists and good practices in the various disciplines.

Methodology
In a preliminary study, the actual research methods are prepared. By means of qualitative research methods such as observation, in-depth interviews and focus groups, the psychological resilience of performing artists is mapped out, with emphasis on the experience of the performing artist himself. Based on these findings, the prevention topics and methods are determined for the prevention programme. A multidisciplinary workgroup will develop a prevention programme that will be integrated into the training programmes of the participating disciplines and will be made available to the wider field of work.
