Royal Conservatoire Antwerp

Introduction

Welcome

The Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp educates some 600 students, approximately a quarter of who come from abroad. We offer programmes in Dance, Drama and Music, concurrent teacher training programmes and a variety of courses for further study. This combination of education options enables us to offer a variety of innovative artistic forms and to collaborate with several professional partners.

The City of Antwerp, the second largest in Belgium, is but a stone’s throw from Brussels, Paris, London and Amsterdam (2 hours max.). Owing to its world port, fashion, art, culture and history, Antwerp is one of Europe’s most attractive student cities. The campus is located on the Antwerp ring road and was designed in the 1960s as a conservatoire, including two large concert halls/theatres around a large courtyard. Over the last fifty years, this building has developed into a major international arts campus where music, theatre, dance and architecture are created, practiced and studied.

Our students and teachers regularly exhibit their work to the public in the form of performances and concerts. These are the ideal occasions to get acquainted with our home, our people and our artistic level. This brochure guides you through the various study programmes Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp. The next step is to visit in person. You are more than welcome!

Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, a unique concept

“Art will not survive if it is imprisoned by tradition. By working together with other disciplines, we develop new, contemporary ways of communicating with the audience.”

Koen Kessels, Music Director of The Royal Ballet, Covent Garden and of the Birmingham Royal Ballet. Member of the artistic board for Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp.

At the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp we have both feet on the ground. It all begins with you, the candidate who shows up to take our entrance exam, and your talent. Your goal is to be a flexible, creative, sophisticated and highly skilled artist who finds his way in the professional world. Solo, in collaboration, as an independent contractor or employee, by means of auditions or networking, at home or abroad. At the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, your career begins while you are studying. Your road to the stage starts here.

What resources do we commit to make this happen? A battalion of professional teachers, experienced performers whose respected names serve as the guarantee of the level of quality they have to offer. But the younger generation is represented as well. They all have a strong connection to the international scene and occupy key positions in dance ensembles, theatre companies, jazz ensembles or famous orchestras. These specialists analyse your talent. And, together with them, you develop your artistic identity.

Infusing theory into practice and vice-versa, because reflection is an important facet of the young professional artist. We are committed to experimentation that leads to expertise. Here we enrich skilfulness with critical reflection.

And last but not least: the arts campus. It is one of a kind. Are you here as a dancer, actor, musician or composer? In that case you follow a flexible learning programme that you can apply in such a way as to best support and develop your individual talent. Collaborating with other disciplines and other artists turns you into a more accomplished artist, one that can (re)invent oneself and is ready to face the challenges of the profession. Attend a rehearsal of an internationally renowned ensemble? Follow a master class with a famous soloist? Have an artist of international renown sit in on your class?

This is the arts campus, where learning – creating – exhibiting are as one.
