‘Immersive storytelling’ means as much as overwhelming the audience with your story. The idea exists that Virtual Reality (VR) may lead to more immersive stories. The last decades VR-applications have mostly been restricted to lab environments and specialized industries. Thanks to several market launches of head mounted displays, 360° camera’s, game accessories, virtual reality hard- and software, … VR-applications have recently become within reach of consumers. Therefore, the potential breakthrough of immersive storytelling for a large audience challenges the field.
In the research project Show&Tell! researchers from the AP University College Antwerp have been investigating the mechanisms behind immersive storytelling. The outcome of this research project is a set of tools that can be used by creatives, producers, programmers, … in the production process of a virtual reality experience. Participants of the summer school ‘Storytelling in virtual reality. An immersive encounter.’ are given the opportunity to work with this toolbox in multidisciplinary teams. Under the guidance of experienced coaches, they will conceive and create a VR experience using the facilities of the Immersive Lab of the AP University College.
VR is too often used as a gimmick, while using the grammar of old media such as movies or games. Storytellers have to learn the technical and productional side of immersive storytelling and they have to investigate how to embed new technical opportunities into new and old narrative techniques.
During the first week (26 - 30 August) we will introduce you into the world of virtual reality with a variety of lectures, guest speakers, demo's and workshops. At the end of the week each group will have a concept, scenario and a storyboard for a fiction or a non-fiction VR-experience.
During the second week (2 - 6 September) your VR protoype will be produced and tested under the guidance of experienced coaches.

The summer school is designed for final year Bachelor students and Master students from different disciplines, as well as for professionals and researchers, interested in deepening their knowledge about the mechanisms of immersion, user-centered storytelling, interactive design, combining analogue and digital prototyping, 360° recording and editing, coding and user testing. We welcome applicants from a broad spectrum of backgrounds: coding, web design, games design, journalism, filmmaking, photography, literature, the arts and creative industries. Participants looking for a relevant mixture of theoretical, empirical and practical insights from an interdisciplinary perspective are warmly encouraged to apply.
For students looking to earn ECTS credits at the summer school, a specific learning path is designed.
English is the language of instruction. As active participation is compulsory in the course, English proficiency is required.
Fee includes course material, coffee breaks, farewell dinner, several excursion and social activities. Does not include lunch or accommodation.
3 ECTS credits can be awarded upon successful completion of the (extended) programme.
