In the entire commemorative industry that was set up for the event of the Great War Centenary, there is little to no interest in the war music of Belgian composers. With the final commemoration project in November 2018 in mind, this project wants to partly fill this gap with the edition and performance of the war songs and choirs of Emile Wambach.
Wambach was a pupil, teacher and director of the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp. Although internationally regarded as one of the most productive composers of war music, a hundred years later this specific oeuvre only exists in handwriting, which stands in the way of further valorization. Based on these autographs, the songs and choirs will be edited and published, and afterwards a musical and textual analysis and a reception and impact study, will be situated within international war music from World War I. This will result in an annotated edition of the songs and choirs, in articles, a performance by students of the conservatory and a CD recording.
