Toon Brouwers (1943) is a Flemish honorary professor, essayist, poet, actor, literary critic and translator. From 1970 to 1991 he was a dramaturge at the Royal Dutch Theater in Antwerp, and from 1991 to 1995 he was director of the theater school Studio Herman Teirlinck. After this, in January 1996 Brouwers became a professor at the Artesis Hogeschool Antwerp where he taught theater history, dramaturgy and theater analysis, and was active in the field of research on and in dramatic art.
He was co-founder and collaborator of several theater groups and institutions, such as the New Flemish Theater (Antwerp 1972), the Raamtheater (Antwerp 1978), the professional association for stage artists BETON (1987) and the Flemish Theater Institute (Brussels 1984). He has published several 100 articles about theater, including in the magazine Documenta and in the monthly De Scène, of which he was editor-in-chief for many years.
He cooperated in various scientific publications, including a number of encyclopaedias. He was a reviewer for the bibliographic magazine De Leeswolf. As a literary author he wrote a number of plays and scenarios, he translated and edited some 20 plays for various professional groups. He published poems in various literary journals and published four collections of poetry.
As an essayist he wrote several books and hundreds of articles on various theater topics.
